|The Multimedia Technology and Computer Graphics Laboratory (MTCG) was founded in 1995 in the Department of Applied Informatics (DoAI) of the University of Macedonia (UoM-Thessaloniki, Greece) and supports teaching and research in various information technology fields. The main research goals of the laboratory are the design, development and evaluation of multimedia systems and services, the semantic analysis and management of multimedia information, as well as the computer vision for the gesture recognition in the domains of learning and music interaction.|
More specifically, the laboratory aims at the following research fields (a) Multimedia systems and multimedia communication: Research in this field includes digitizationand creation of video and audio content as well as processing, coding, compression, transmission, access and retrieval of multimedia information. Research has also been done in the domain of the videoconferencing systems by a set of streaming telecommunication technologies for remote or mobile devices. (b) Semantic description and management of multimedia information: Research is conducted in relation to the description of web resources with metadata and the semantic analysis and management of multimedia information within the Semantic Web framework. Research includes automatic metadata generation, metadata quality assessment, metadata repository management, ontology development for the semantic description of metadata resources used in various domains, etc. Research is applied in e-learning, cultural heritage, digital libraries, etc. (c) E-learning: Research refers to multimedia based learning systems, virtual learning, learning objects and learning repositories modeling, video-conference lessons, learning outcomes evaluation, learning content reuse. Research results are applied in the e-learning platform ASEA (Asynchronous and Synchronous distance lEArning), which supports teaching in the laboratory. (d) Image processing and multimodal interactions: Research deals with the development of methodologies and "technological paradigms" on computer vision and networks of wireless motion sensors aiming at modelingand identifying gestural and sonic interactions for contemporary music and the control of mechatronic systems,as well asat classifying and recognizing medical patternsin an image sequence. Latest achievements refer to an "individual approach" of the finger gesture recognition based on the stochastic modelling. The applications concern directly the human-computer interaction, the gesture control of sound and the safeguardingand transmission of the intangible cultural heritage (performing arts, craftsmanship etc). (e) Graphics and virtual reality: Research in this field includes development of virtual learning environments in the web, 3D simulations, 3D model reconstruction from real data, Geographical Information Systemand digital terrain modeling, 3D content creation for the television, etc.
Application lies in the fields of e-learning, local development, medicine, industry, cultural heritage, entertainment, etc. MTCG has three ongoing national funded projects: a) Project ArtOrasis - "Computer vision for the recognition of gestures of a rare know-how" b) Project ByzeMuse - "Signal processing for the analysis and stochastic modeling of the musical interpretation of Mount Athos" and c) Project PianOrasis - "Computer vision for the recognition of musical interactions".

Through the holistic character of its curriculum, the Department aims at developing musicians well equipped to face the professional challenges of a wide array of career settings in music performance, research, and education. Moreover, as a consequence of its aspirations to maintain communicative ties with society, the Department encourages the development of performance groups (orchestras, choirs, chamber music ensembles, traditional music ensembles etc) that may represent Greece in music events of national and international scope.
The Department of Music Science and Art is a member of Association Européenne des Conservatoires, Académies de Musique et Musikhochschulen (AEC).
